    What is an arborist?

Arborists are trained in the art and science of planting, caring for, and maintaining trees. They understand the needs of trees and are equipped to provide expert tree care.

Tree maintenance might include pruning, fertilization, or consulting with a client to improve the safety of the tree. You should only work with a certified arborist (Houston doesn't have as many as you might think).

The International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) is responsible for designating a certified arborist. To earn your designation as an ISA Certified Arborist® you must be trained in all aspects of arboriculture, pass an extensive exam, and demonstrate three or more years of full-time, practical work experience and/or earn an arboriculture, horticulture, forestry or landscape architecture degree.

A code of ethics for ISA Certified Arborists® strengthens the credibility and reliability of the work force. This certification is accredited by the American National Standards Institute, meeting and exceeding ISO 17024.

What does an arborist (Houston area) charge?

If you wanted the arborist to come in and offer his expertise but did not necessarily want the arborist to cure the disease then the arborist would simply charge you a consulting fee based on the number of hours the consultation took, and on whether you wanted a write-up or just his or her verbal feedback.

Certified Arborists can charge anywhere between $50 per hour up to $450 per hour. Each individual arborist is different and rarely do tree care companies have a set rate for each arborist. The more experienced the arborist, the higher the rate.

If you want the arborist to perform actual tree care services like tree removal or pruning, then the pricing works a little differently. Typically, it would be based on how long the project is and the degree of technical difficulty. For instance, a 2-hour job could cost $400, and an all-day job could cost $2,000, depending on the equipment and the manpower required.

    Why hire an arborist?

Here in Houston, homeowners typically have many different trees. You need someone with a broad range of tree experience to get the job done right. For example, you need an arborist when you are dealing with palm trees.

Remember, caring for your trees is an investment! Attractive, beautiful trees add value to your property, which means when it's time to sell, your home may sell for more. Offers may also come in much faster. By contrast, poorly maintained trees can actually be dangerous.

Tree care is not really a DIY job, especially if you don't know much about trees. Your lack of knowledge could make your tree problems worse. In addition, tree work tends to involve working with chainsaws and at great heights. You could get injured or even killed attempting to do this work yourself.

Ask an arborist: how can I tell my tree needs pruning?

You’re looking for dead or diseased branches. These branches are likely to fall in the next storm, and they’re taking resources from the tree which could be used to support healthy growth elsewhere. You might also look for branches which are growing erratically, to ensure your tree continues to grow in an attractive, shapely manner.

Pruning does not harm trees…it’s a task arborists undertake to maintain the tree’s health. However, improper pruning can cause problems, so make sure you leave this task to a skilled arborist unless you have the proper training.

Very professional and helpful crew. Only hiccup was a small misunderstanding about what portion of the estimate I wanted completed; however, they showed up on time (even a bit early) and were done removing 2 trees pruning 3 others and cleaning up all debris in a little over 2.5 hours. Victor went above and beyond and had a great attitude throughout. I would definitely recommend them as their prices were also very reasonable.

Tree fertilization is a critical component in promoting the optimal health of our trees. Many of our urban soils are impoverished due to a myriad of complex circumstances that surround a typical Houston tree. Limited rooting space, poor soil structure, and lack of proper nutrients are all reasons for slow growing and poorly performing trees. Thankfully there are solutions to these problems that The Urban Foresters trained arborists will be able to offer. Soil aeration, root stimulations, vertical mulching and insect and disease control are only a few of the valuable services that The Urban Foresters has to offer.

Image of Arborist HoustonThe Urban Foresters have developed a tree fertilization program called TUF Trees to provide a significant boost to young or small trees and protect your valuable mature trees.

Homeowners who want faster growing trees in newly developed neighborhoods should seriously consider scheduling this service. Many times an early age is the best time to start proper care of your trees to avoid costly problems in the future. Whether you have young trees or mature trees that you want to protect from harsh weather the TUF Tree program will provide the valuable nutrients your trees need.

Disease detection and treatment should also be a key aspect of your decision to consult with a Houston tree service company. At The Urban Foresters we specialize in the early spotting of certain ailments to your tree. This can mean the difference between successful treatment and losing the tree forever. Make sure a Tree Trimming Specialist is going to be consulting with you and that he or she has experience in the Houston tree care scene.
